The Baby Food Critic: Now With Utensils
Charlotte is one step closer to self-sufficiency. Before you know it, she’ll be changing her own diaper.

It was very important to Ellen and her Polish roots (well, almost Polish—her family was right across the border in Czechoslovakia) that Charlotte liked pierogies. Sensing this pressure, Charlie couldn’t shovel them into her mouth fast enough.
Charlotte loves waffles but hates to see them go to waste. So when she’s had her fill, it’s only logical that she wants to share the wealth.
Or she once saw me sneak Bailey pizza crust at the table. Or grilled chicken. Or…waffles. This meal was very reminiscent of the last line of a famous public service announcement from the 1980s:
Charlotte munching on an apple. Mood music provided by Dire Straits.
In the first episode of The Baby Food Critic shot at the new house, Charlotte manages to put away a few Gerber Puffs while showing me just how big she is.
I could eat the same thing for days at a time and be perfectly happy. Charlotte feels the same way about her feet.
Charlotte tried spinach last night. She didn’t hate it, but it seems she prefers the taste of her feet.

The Baby Food Critic has become so popular that she’s outgrown her meager original set. Tonight, Grandpa Chuck assembled a new throne for our little Gene Siskel. No more Bumbo. No more IKEA table. No more if-she-leans-back-too-far-she’ll-crash-through-the-kitchen-window.
The first meal in her new chair was also her first foray into meat-eating. In this clip, the first bite is carrots. The second bite marks the end of her vegetarian career:
Charlotte scarfed down her squash tonight in record time. If you’d like a second opinion, The Mommy Food Critic had a taste and gave her approval.
We will keep bananas on the menu. Next up: peas.
This confirms it – bananas are hilarious!
Here’s an outtake from the other day. Charlotte’s Great Nana (her dad’s mom’s mom) sent her that Valentine with the puppy on it. Mid-meal, she decided she needed to make sure it wasn’t a real dog, ready to pounce. Bailey was convinced it was, in fact, a new canine addition – and expressed her displeasure by barking profusely.
Before we get to the eating portion of the program, let’s pause for a quick high-five.
On to the main course. Today we served oatmeal with peaches and it was a mess. Tomorrow I will be having oatmeal for breakfast, but probably won’t film it.
After mixed reviews for green beans, we moved on to peaches, which to us looked and smelled and tasted (yes, tasted) delicious. For Charlotte, it was not love at first bite.
She came around, but found sucking the peaches off her thumb preferable to the more traditional spoon-feeding method.
We’re not sure if Charlotte was rebelling against the green beans or protesting the repetitive nature of tonight’s meal.
Because we don’t want to turn her off food entirely, Ellen capped off the meal with sweet potatoes. Charlotte’s mood changed instantly.
The green beans were a mild hit tonight, which surprised us. I enjoy green beans as much as the next vegetable lover, but I’m not sure I could eat anything that color.
Charlotte washed them down with her sippy cup. Or she tried to, at least.
