Take Us Out to the Ballgame

In what has to be the greatest groomsman gift in wedding history, my brother-in-law Keith gave me two tickets to today’s Yankees-Red Sox game. All month, I’ve been nervously watching the standings. If the Yanks clinched the American League East too early, today’s game might have featured the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre all-stars. But everything played out perfectly, and the Yanks came into today’s game with a chance to win their division against their hated rival. It was perfect.

Then it poured.

But the rain delay was not a problem for Ellen and me. Our seats were covered by an overhang, and we were perfectly content to watch the Giants game on the big screen while the skies cleared.

It was a fantastic gameāthe Yankees’ 100th victory. Highlights included home runs by Melky Cabrera and Mark Teixeira, a big two-RBI single by Hideki Matsui, and the soft-serve ice cream (and sprinkles) I ate out of a miniature baseball helmet.

And we brought Charlotte home a Yankee hat. She’s ready for the playoffs.
[Keith & Karen, thanks for the tickets! We really had a wonderful afternoon.]

I’m glad it worked out the way it did. It reminds me of the time I had bought tickets for Tino’s first game back to the stadium as a Cardinal. Clemens was stuck on 299 wins & kept losing/no decisioning. He ended up getting #300 the night we were there.
