Back in September

Apologies for the lack of activity. Busy times. California vacation, engagement parties, weddings, fantasy football drafts, new laptop, new job…
On Monday I’ll be back and you’ll be updated.

It’s taken fourteen months (or twenty-eight years), but I’ve finally reached the top of the Google rankings for searches of my name. I don’t know how long my reign will last, so I took this screen shot.
I’ve gone back to the well for another edition of “The First Time News Was Fit To Print,” where I find the first time The New York Times mentioned a particular subject. The highlight of Volume V is the Sony Walkman:
Josh Lansing and the young blonde woman had never even met before, but as they passed each other on Madison Avenue the other afternoon, she waved and smiled and he tipped his headphones in salute….What the two well-dressed strangers first noticed about each other was that they were both possessors of the newest status symbol around town: the Walkman, a portable stereo unit (priced in most stores at $200), consisting of an ultra-light headphone set plugged into a cassette player that weighs in at less than 14 ounces, batteries included.
“It’s just like Mercedes-Benz owners honking when they pass each other on the road,” explained Mr. Lansing, whose cassette hung from his Gucci belt.

Today I’m sidelined by a nasty fever. At one point last night, my temperature hit 103º. I knew it was bad when Bailey switched into comforting-dog mode, a far cry from her usual wild-dog-desperate-for-attention mode.
Ellen drew a lukewarm bath around midnight, which to me was torture. I was shivering like a crazy person. Two weeks ago, on my 28th birthday, I decided I wanted to join the Polar Bear Club. Clearly I’m not Polar Bear material. Put it this way: if I ever have secrets you’re trying to extract, just throw me in a tub of 58º water.
For only the second time in my long (and storied) career, I took a sick day. (Relive my earlier infirmity here.) But by two major indicators, I’m feeling better. My temperature has returned to double-digits, and Bailey’s back to her high-energy self. Speaking of, she’s running up and down the stairs with her blanket. Guess I’m not sick enough to not intervene.
I’m trying to plow through saved episodes of Flight of the Conchords before my TiVo runs out of space. This scene from episode four had me laughing.
Here’s the same song performed live a few years ago:

Today is Bailey’s second birthday. So far, she’s happy with and protective of her new toys. The festivities continue tonight. On the agenda are a longer walk and a higher tolerance for whining.
Relive all the Bailey memories by browsing through these past entries:
• Man vs. Beast: Bailey comes home and marks her territory.
• Speaking of Bailey: More early photos of the pup.
• Bailey Being Bailey: Caught in the act.
• Celebrations: Even more photos.
