Weekend Update

What an absolutely miserable day in New Jersey. I’d be content to stay inside and nap and drink tea, but Bailey’s bathroom is inconveniently located on the front lawn. Subscribing to the “once you’re wet, you can’t get more wet” theory, we just waded through the neighborhood. She almost drowned in a thigh-high puddle.
You’re not missing much here at the English household.
Two items of note since last we spoke:
• My career continues as a mental_floss blogger. I wrote this week about adult spelling bees (and worked in the story of the 1989 Lakeview Elementary 4th Grade Finals), alternative fantasy leagues, and my bad timing with a Starbucks promotion. Plus a few other posts. Go on, take a look. You’ll find them.
• With Nextel service deteriorating faster than Sammy Sosa’s career, Ellen and I switched to Sprint. Because they’ve merged, there was no $200 cancellation fee. However, there have been plenty of small headaches our first week.
Today our first bill came. I think it was $54 dollars more than we expected. I say “I think” because it was printed in Spanish. When I called to ask for a new bill, they said there would be a $5 fee to reprint in English. Eventually, my good friend came around and decided to eat those hefty printing and mailing costs. There were two other issues, but they’re not nearly as entertaining. Oh, and the $54 was a mistake. My frugality knows no language barriers.
